EDUCATION

What is Medical Cannabis?

Cannabis is derived from the cannabis plant (Cannabis Sativa). It grows wild in many of the tropical and temperate areas of the world, and can be grown in almost any climate. The term medical cannabis refers to using the whole, unprocessed cannabis plant or its basic extracts which can be used to treat symptoms of illness and other conditions.

The main active ingredient in cannabis is called delta-9 tetrahydro-cannabinol, commonly known as THC. This is the part of the plant that can have an "uplifting" effect on the body. There is a wide range of THC potency between cannabis products, with varying effects and benefits on the body.

What is the difference between THC and CBD?

Etrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are two types of cannabinoids found naturally in the resin of the cannabis plant (Cannabis Sativa).

Both of these substances interact with the cannabinoid receptors found in the human body, and the types of effects brought about by these compounds are different and can offer numerous benefits.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system also acts in response to illness.  For example, tumor cells have been shown to express more cannabinoid receptors than healthy cells. Studies also show a rise in endocannabinoid levels in patients with various disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, anxiety, chronic pain and arthritis.

As a result, some scientists believe the overall function of the endocannabinoid system is to regulate homeostasis. Homeostasis is a key element in the biology of all living things. It is best described as the ability to maintain stable internal conditions that are necessary for survival. Disease is largely a result of a failure in achieving homeostasis.

What are Cannabinoids?

The cannabis plant contains over 500 natural compounds. According to research Cannabinoids make up at least 85 of those compounds, and while some cannabinoids are psychoactive, others are not. Out of the 85 cannabinoids, two stand out: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

The human body also produces its own cannabinoid chemicals - similar to those found in cannabis — via the endocannabinoid system.
